Né en 1952 à Epsom, Surrey (Angleterre), Martin Parr est diplômé de photographie de Manchester Polytechnic en 1973. En 1994, il devient un membre à part entière de la Magnum Photographic Corporation et directeur artistique invité pour les Rencontres d’Arles en 2004 et pour le New York Photo Festival en 2008.
Photographe, réalisateur et collectionneur de divers objets, Martin Parr s’est construit une réputation internationale sur son imagerie innovante, son approche déviée du documentaire social et son apport à la culture photographique au Royaume-Uni et à l’étranger.
Il remporte le prix de photojournalisme Erich Salomon Prize en 2006 et gagne le prix Baumier Mercier à PhotoEspana en 2008, en reconnaissance de sa carrière professionnelle et ses contributions à la photographie contemporaine.
