    CHUL-HYUN AHN

    Dans l’espace confiné du cadre, Chul-Hyun Ahn assemble savamment lumières et miroirs pour modifier la perspective. L’écho visuel crée par la répétition de motifs lumineux plonge le spectateur dans un espace infini. Dans cet environnement totalement illusoire, ses sculptures mènent celui qui les regarde à abandonner toute forme de rationalisme : « En contemplant le vide, j’espère que les gens atteignent un autre lieu ou trouvent ce qu’ils recherchaient’’.

    Par l’utilisation de matériaux industriels comme le béton, le contreplaqué, les miroirs, les néons et les LED, Chul-Hyun Ahn donne à ses oeuvres une dimension contemplative. Interagir avec l’une de ses installations engendre un questionnement sur la perception même de l’objet et sa constitution. L’artiste projette le spectateur dans cet univers artificiel remettant en question les limites physiques de la sculpture. Ses oeuvres procurent une sensation de vide et de profondeur sans fins générant ainsi un étourdissant paradoxe.

    Ses connaissances dans les domaines de l’art et de la technologie se combinent aux influences Zen. Ramification japonaise du Bouddhisme, cette pratique prône l’accès à l’illumination par la méditation grâce à la réduction des stimuli optiques. L’impact visuel provoqué par la réflexion des rayons lumineux s’apparente à la traduction matérielle de ce cheminement vers une forme de spiritualité.

    Chul-Hyun Ahn est né en 1971 à Busan, en Corée du Sud. Depuis 2002, il vit et travaille à Baltimore, aux États-Unis. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans de nombreuses expositions à Paris, Berlin, New York et Séoul.
